ABSTRACT

Motivation, the first trigger of doctoral completion, is presented in this chapter. Having a strong connection with the WHY behind a doctorate is discussed, and a series of exercises are presented, which help the reader explore why they want to commit to the process and research a topic in-depth. The motivation trigger guides candidates to make good choices throughout the process and can be used to reignite commitment on days when they feel like giving up.

The chapter closes with a quote from a PhD candidate who said, “On the days you want to stop, focus on the why”. In addition, a summary of key concepts and recommended exercises are given and the theme of Part II: Organisation. Well begun is half done is introduced. It focuses on owning your doctorate by treating it as a project and being well-organised.
