ABSTRACT

The chapter explains the purpose of a Literature Review and its role in shaping the development of the doctoral topic and the final body of work. It then goes into extensive detail discussing the typical format of a doctoral thesis. The purpose of this approach is to help candidates understand the standard of detail they are expected to deliver and start thinking about the structure of their dissertation or commentary document. Dropout rates increase during the thesis writing phase, and it is hoped that presenting the typical structure and linking it back to the work plan developed in Chapter 4 (Planning and Critical Thinking) will mitigate this risk. Key concepts, exercises, and practical tips are provided leading into Part III: Progress. Finished is better than perfect, which focuses on completion.
