ABSTRACT

This chapter covers job hunting — where to look for jobs, how to apply, some tips on how to present yourself at an interview, job-sharing and flexible work — and it also looks at the question of self-employment or working in partnership with others. By the late 1980s, it had become increasingly obvious that the drop in the birth-rates which occurred in the 1960s and 1970s was beginning to have an effect on Britain’s employment patterns. Demographic statistics show the number of 16 to 19-year-olds in the population falling sharply and, as a result, the pool of school-leavers available for work also shrinking. A drop of 37 per cent in the numbers of school-leavers and young people going into work has been estimated.
