ABSTRACT

Stanislavski’s final, and incomplete, project at the Moscow Art Theatre was Moliere’s Tartuffe. He started work with a small group of actors not long before his death, with a strictly educational end in view. So it would be true to say it was not a question of rehearsing a play, as such, but of improving the technique of the actors involved. Stanislavski tried to find theatrical images that would give form and substance to Moliere’s immortal work using a new, improved, more effective acting technique. The unsatisfactory state of contemporary acting distressed him more and more, and he worried about the future of the Moscow Art Theatre itself. Stanislavski used every meeting with actors and directors to propound his ideas. The group gathered in the large room and waited eagerly for Stanislavski to come in.
