ABSTRACT

This chapter covers international nuclear and chemical weapons, and ballistic-missile developments that have taken place since June 1993. Changes in national nuclear and missile forces are recorded in the text preceding the relevant regional section and are reflected in the relevant national entry. A number of measures have been instituted to assist the four nuclear-armed republics of the former Soviet Union with the elimination of nuclear weapons on their soil and with its cost. Other measures will compensate Belarus, Kazakhstan and Ukraine for the loss of nuclear material in the warheads returned to Russia for dismantlement and they will be given security assurances. In a separate agreement, signed in January 1994, the US agreed to purchase some 500 tons of HEU as this is removed from nuclear warheads and after it has been converted into low-enriched uranium from Russia.
