ABSTRACT

In this third session the participants are asked to look more closely at how they see themselves, rather than how they see others. They are asked to think about an area of ability that is often most valued in school and workplace settings – ‘intelligence’. The facilitator encourages the participants to explore their perceptions of what it means to be ‘intelligent’ and in particular to reflect on how intelligent the participants judge themselves to be. Research has identified higher intelligence as a resilience factor. The session aims to challenge perceptions of intelligence that may be narrow or inaccurate. It also aims to go some way towards countering divisions and stigma that may exist in the classroom between those categorised as ‘clever’ and those categorised as not clever. The session also introduces the concept of multiple intelligences and the idea that we are all clever in our own way.
