ABSTRACT

In this session, participants are asked to explore their awareness and understanding of a strong and complex emotion: jealousy. It would not be possible to deal with all the complexities of this emotion in a single session, but it is possible to touch on pertinent issues for the participants and their peer group. Such issues might involve the impact of growing materialism in wider society, competitiveness in school, or the perceived status or popularity gained by achieving a certain appearance or lifestyle. The facilitator may wish to start the session by writing the word jealousy in large letters in the centre of the whiteboard. The facilitator can then ask participants to generate their own definitions for the word, or create a ‘thoughtstorm’. The facilitator can then prompt and guide brief group discussion aimed at clarifying the participants’ current level of understanding.
