ABSTRACT

Arts management and the organisation Case study: Arts and crafts The development of a craft manufacturing shared workspace with a retail and tourist focus in regional Queensland. The Cooloola Regional Development Bureau identified the economic opportunities and, assisted by funding through the Office of Labour Market Adjustment, determined to undertake a feasibility study into the establishment of an arts and crafts shared workspace, with a manufacturing and retail focus. Audiences for arts and crafts exhibitions were well developed and required minimal encouragement to become purchasers. The capital subsidy scheme covered new buildings or renovations for a visual arts studio, sculpture and craft workshop, art gallery space, office area, toilets, showers, storage, kitchen facilities, fixed equipment and outdoor cultural facilities for creative arts and crafts. This national research verified the importance of providing business skills training for arts and crafts workers in order to sustain the development envisaged for the industry nationally and, in particular, in the Cooloola Shire.
