ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on the four difficult years back in Japan for Frank Coaldrake, the first four years in Japan for Maida Coaldrake. The Coaldrakes returned to Japan in mid-1950 on a ship which was stalked by hostile mainland Chinese planes in the Taiwan Straits. Through much of the rest of 1950 they spent in Odawara, bombing missions to Korea flew out every evening close overhead from the nearby Atsugi Air Base. In many ways material conditions became more trying for the Coaldrakes because of the withdrawal of Occupation rations, although material prosperity for the Japanese population was improving. The major development in terms of the Coaldrakes’ responsibilities in Japan was the establishment of the Izu Mission. This marked the beginning of the second phase of Frank Coaldrake's ministry in Japan.
