ABSTRACT

Indeed, to the best of the author's knowledge the double cantillation is the cause of varying customs which are still observed in various Jewish communities with respect to the public reading of the Ten Commandments. In the light of the principles, let them explore one of the possible explanations for the use of the upper cantillations in the public reading of the Ten Commandments. However, it is possible to observe even at this stage of our discussion that there are some traditions which do not require a perceptible musical difference when chanting the Ten Commandments in the upper cantillation. Various opinions were expressed, until finally Rabbi Menahem explained that the upper cantillation was intended for the public reading of the Commandments at congregational worship, while the lower signs were for the individual to use in his private reading.
