ABSTRACT

With the determined obstinacy characteristic of the Jew, the Sephardim guarded the spiritual possessions they took into exile with them from Spain which had been a second homeland for them; they saw themselves as the custodians of that tradition even after the Spanish "homeland" had banished them. This opinion coincides with the conception that is apparent in the above-mentioned article by Higinio Angles, a conception he arrives at from the standpoint of a specialist in Christian religious music in Spain. Crystallization of the Jewish musical tradition in Spain is directly associated with the social and cultural transformations that occurred in the lives of the Jewish communities in the middle of the 10th century. The growing importance of singing during Sabbath and holiday prayers is attested to by one of the greatest Jewish scholars of Spain, Rabbi Joseph ion Migash.
