ABSTRACT

The link between the singing of birds and music is a universal theme that has impressed the creative mind of man throughout the ages. Composers, poets, philosophers and musicologists referred to it in different ways and approaches. In many writings, mainly those of literary character, one finds occasional short statements referring to birds and semi singing birds. The theologian and philologist abul-Qasim al-Zamakhshari reports in his general work on ethics legends about the sirens and a wonderful Greek bird whose song charmed all other birds. Sirens, in Greek mythology were creatures half bird and half woman who lured sailors to destruction by the sweetness of their song. In connection with these generalities, mention should be made of treatises, both translated and original, devoted to pneumatic and hydraulic apparatuses and organs.
