ABSTRACT

This chapter examines the possibility of reconstructing the triptych and restoring to its currently missing right panel. It considers the triptych’s iconography, the reasons for creating it and its possible function, placing it at the same time in context with other related works. On the inner side of the left wing St John the Evangelist is depicted sitting in front of the cave on Patmos and dictating the text of his Gospel to his disciple Prochoros. The cave occupies the full width of the panel. The saint is seated on the left-hand side on a wooden stool with a red cushion. There is not only an iconographic relationship between this panel and the Benaki triptych, but also a stylistic one. Similarly, the question of what was depicted on the outer side of this missing panel must also remain unanswered.
