ABSTRACT

A program can be examined from many different angles. The production process in almost any medium can be divided into three phases. Preproduction includes activities necessary to prepare for broadcast or recording; production, actual broadcast or recording; and postproduction, creative treatment after production to put the production into final form for the audience. The exact procedures covered by the term preproduction vary with medium and intended finished product. In a radio station, preparation for broadcast includes a variety of activities, from choosing the overall programming specialization and devising the format to selecting recordings for airplay and preparing newscasts. Audio production usually centers on the mixing process. Radio stations that broadcast live telephone call-in programs use a special production technique, audio delay, to retain control over content.
