ABSTRACT

In the sixth century too the miracle story - consciously continuing the biblical tradition - is not a text in the sense of its being primarily a written statement of a truth that is adequately expressible in words and language. The miracle story was preserved for institutionalized remembering in highly uncertain circumstances by a corporation basing its larger ideology as well as its practical administration on the written word. Discharges had been traditional in Greek, Roman and Gallic curing techniques. In the US, a medical authority has recently presented clinical evidence that even the visualization of appropriate images can transmit healing messages to the body's autonomous systems. The written words of the miracle story cannot be understood by themselves as pure texts.
