ABSTRACT

It is not very common in the history of Arabie grammar to find scholars who deviate from the consensus which the basic issues related to the grammatical theory seem to enjoy. Although one finds frequent cases of unique interpretations, especially in i-ab, attributed to single grammarians who do not conform to the generally accepted norm, these cases are almost totally restricted to particular details, and do not constitute any departure from what we may refer to as the «essential core» of principles upon which rests the general theory of grammatical analysis. Although one may not want to exaggerate by describing this approach as dissenting or revolutionary-as with Qutrub and Ibn Mada' respectively— since it tends to develop and modify the general theory of regimen, rather than reject it outright, its innovative nature is unrivalled in the Arab grammatical tradition, as the authors do not know of any other attempt at giving meaning a central role in the explanation of awamil.
