ABSTRACT

This chapter traces the origin of the technique in taqdir, which any preliminary survey shows that it is basically more characteristic of the later grammarians - roughly from the fifth century A.H. onward- than of their predecessors. Initially the authors shall examine three different contexts; namely, the sila (immediately after a relative pronoun), the sifa (where an adjective is restored after a noun) and the habar of a nominal sentence4 (where the restoration follows the subject of that sentence). Commentators on the 'Alfiyya and other late grammarians almost universally point out to constructions where 'insa replaces habar (statement). This position is based on the conviction that these constructions require habar and that 'insa' is inappropriate for them, hence the necessity of interpreting the occurrence of 'insa' in such constructions in a manner that introduces habar through a process of restoration or suppletive insertion.
