ABSTRACT

In this chapter, the authors explore the linkages between various kinds of music and societal settings. For example, they try to see to what extent special kinds of music such as mixed choirs, woodwind chamber music, comic opera, or other forms are connected with or even caused by certain societal structures. The authors explore what regularities can be established about some form of interrelationship between society and the special qualities of musical sounds. Folk music should be considered as a separate form of music. In contrast to folk music, the origin of art music is usually known. The simplest instrumental music is based on only one instrument or part, in contrast to that with a more or less logical structuring of multiple parts. The solo concerto appeared at approximately the same time as the symphony through the convergence of various sociological factors.
