ABSTRACT

One of the most distinctive features of contemporary society is the extent to which our knowledge and experience of the world is mediated. The life of the individual is increasingly spent creating and consuming images on television, film, computer, and telephone screens. Indeed, that we conceive of, and act in, this world via media is one of the defining characteristics of postmodern society, as we will shortly explain. Clearly, media saturates everyday life today, profoundly influencing and shaping social relations. But the question is how What are the actual effects of living in a hypermediated world?
