ABSTRACT

The cursus of Q. Trebellius Rufus is recorded on the bases of three commemorative statues that were raised in his honour at Athens by the Boule of the Areopagus, the Boule of Six Hundred and the People of Athens. The most significant feature of the Agora base, however, is that below the dedication are appended two letters inscribed in much smaller characters. The development of Trebellius’ career, more particularly the precise sequence of the posts he held, has been a standing controversy ever since his inscriptions came to light. Comparison with the careers of other provincial priests, whether of Narbonensis or elsewhere, shows that municipal appointments normally preceded the provincial flaminate. The historical implications of the appointment are best reserved for later discussion. The decree of the Council and Demos of the Ephesians lays down that Vibius Salutaris shall be awarded a gold crown on the occasion he is proclaimed in the assemblies.
