ABSTRACT

This chapter traces the history of drug regulation in the us and the uk from the nineteenth century up to the early 1980s. Particular emphasis is placed on Government–industry relations and the political economy of the pharmaceutical industry in order to examine the extent to which corporate involvement and bias have been embodied in the regulatory policies of both countries. In so doing, the research presented in this chapter will help us to explore the explanatory relevance and significance of theories of regulation to the pharmaceutical sector (e.g. the corporatist, capture and Marxist theories discussed in Chapter 1).
