ABSTRACT

Relating to the environment begins right after birth. The basic sign for any relationship is a composite of two key signs for relating. It is used when open choice of any form of relating needs to be indicated. This chapter focuses on the specific forms of relating. Awareness is the basic form of relating in that it is the first degree, the least “active” of the many possibilities. In all states of relating it is the aim, the idea, not the actual movement that occurs to produce the state of relating. Active relating occurs when a visible movement of some kind is made with the aim of relating to someone or something. The general term “addressing” is used to specify this form. The active part of the addressing sign is the straight line; this is drawn from the staff of the person who is active, the one who is doing the relating.
