ABSTRACT

Initiation of an action, its source in the body, how it flows out as movement–all greatly color the intent, the expression and meaning of a movement. Movement may begin with an internal body awareness, producing a heightened energy in a particular part of the body. Such a heightened, focused state is called “point-of-interest.” This state may occur in a central part of the body, such as chest, pelvis, hip, or shoulder, or in a peripheral part, such as the hand, foot, or head. The idea and application of central and peripheral deal with two separate categories—the spatial aspects or the physical. Movement can be spatially central or peripheral in relation to the performer’s kinesphere; or movement can also make use of central or peripheral parts of the body. A movement may be initiated or led by a central or peripheral part of the body.
