ABSTRACT

The basic action of rotating as a unit is the usual form for some objects and some parts of the body; for others turning takes the form of a twist. Twisting, a familiar movement pattern, takes various forms in the world around people. Twists in the body have functional as well as expressive use in movement. A twist may be in the same spatial volume, or one of closing in to a center, or one of opening out from a center as the twisting occurs. In the category of rotation of the body, the term in general use is Turn. Turning can be: revolutions, rotations of the body-as-a-whole, or rotations of parts of the body, the latter having two subdivisions. A turn of a body part in one piece is expressively and functionally different from a turning action within a body part, i.e., a twist.
