ABSTRACT

Pure enjoyment of passage through space, of the act of traveling itself, requires neither a sense of destination nor a need for departure, only a wish to go, to explore freely the space available. Such is the feeling of the open road, of the wanderer setting off on his travels with no planned route. In dance, such freedom of traversing space is often enjoyed through running, but other modes of locomotor steps which allow ground to be covered may be used. The path taken while traveling may range from a random progression, as occurs when one is uncertain, drifting or day-dreaming, to paths resulting from specific goals or from the desire to experience specific path designs. The length of a path sign indicates its duration, that is, how much time is taken for that path. It does not show distance traveled across the floor.
