ABSTRACT

This chapter presents the main systems of directional reference in daily use. Many forms of dance include strong twisting actions in the torso with the result that the upper and lower parts have different fronts, a condition known as “divided front.” Stance is the personal front, the forward direction established by the body-as-a-whole prior to a twisted state. When parts of the body twist away from that front, the part that does not twist retains the original Front, the forward direction. In some dance forms, the lower part of the body twists away while the upper part retains the front direction of Stance. A directional reference to the Body Cross of Axes is based on the body build; there is no concern with outside points of reference, neither with the pull of gravity nor with a front established by a stage or classroom.
