ABSTRACT

It is not enough to see movement; one must know how to understand it, what to look for when observing and what to aim for when moving. One needs to know what are the component parts of movement and be able to recognize and be aware of which of these are being used or are particularly featured in any composite movement. Separation of the material of movement into its elements means recognizing those elements and naming them through use of a practical, universal terminology. The Movement Family Tree of Verbs illustrates in an organized form the raw material with which people have been dealing. The mechanics of movement may be analyzed in many ways—the sequence of muscle action, the degree of the angles produced by limb segments, at the joints, and so on. The specific need dictates the form that the investigation will take.
