ABSTRACT

The exploration of traveling has so far been general, now it will be more specific. From a starting place traveling may occur into the forward, backward, sideward, or diagonal directions in between. While the music for Reading Study No. 10 is in 3/4 meter, the footwork need not adhere to waltz-like steps, the steps may be many and may “run over” the music beats. It is the traveling that is important. Notice the stillness on count 3 which, interrupting the traveling, adds to the phrasing. When circling is initiated from within body, circular paths of unpremeditated size and design may result. The movement impetus is free, is of the moment. Awareness of a circle, and its center, is more easily achieved when one is dancing in a circular group formation. A turning action may be slight, the purpose being to face into another room direction. Degrees of circling are shown with black pins in the same way as for turning.
