ABSTRACT

Revolution is defined as: a progressive motion of a body around a center or axis, a turn or rotation of the body-as-a-whole. To all intents and purposes the words revolution, rotation, and turn are interchangeable, though for certain movements one term is preferable to another. This chapter focuses on rotation of the body-as-a-whole around the three axes. Rotation occurs around an axis. When one is standing, turning occurs around the vertical axis, but the same physical activity, performed while one is lying on the floor, becomes logrolling. Continuous rolling in one direction produces traveling. All too often turning, pivoting, is thought of as a mechanical action or device, perhaps because so many inanimate objects in life, such as a CD, rotate rigidly. For movement, it is important to realize that the first “notion” of turning, the origin of the motion, takes place in the brain.
