ABSTRACT

Children have been playing blind man’s buff since before drama began. It was played by the ancient Greeks and is found in every culture. When adults played it in rougher times, the blindfolded player was hit, ‘buffed’ as they used to say, often with a stick. This workshop uses the gentler version of the game and is about developing listening skills as a performer by listening for the breaths of fellow performers. The blindfolded player now has to locate all the other players by listening for the sound of their breath. As each player is found, they should move to the edge of the room and return to silent breathing. When the last person is found the blindfold can be removed and that last person is then blindfolded. So the game is repeated until everyone has had his or her turn.
