Now that we have an understanding of how the breathing and the vocal apparatus work, and have spoken and listened to a few words, we can move on to text. As with all the work on the voice, this is a workshop as much about listening as it is about speaking. It is about using the hearing apparatus as well as the speaking apparatus and it is about the importance of speaking and listening as physical activities. You will need some text. This could be from a play you are working on or the workshop participants could choose individual speeches. You could use some of the pieces of text in this book – the sonnet, or the lyrics of ‘Dem Bones’.
