ABSTRACT

This chapter considers the case of Podemos in Spain. This serves as a case of left-leaning populists taking pro-environmental positions. The chapter focuses on Podemos’s years of prominence from 2010 to 2020. It analyzes first those positions and then examines their anchoring in the party’s populism. Similarly to the preceding cases, those positions became material for Podemos to assert its vision of what the Spanish people needed and deserved, and to contrast that to the harms done by a corrupt political and business elite - in ways that were consonant with Podemos’s ideological ‘home,’ its supporters base, and the economic and political contexts in which Podemos has operated.
