ABSTRACT

This chapter briefly summarizes the findings and then considers their implications for the present and future. First, the environmental positions of populist parties may be more or less genuine. Second, it should not be surprising to see any one party change its positions over time or even maintain inconsistent stances at any given time. We can expect the deviating stances to be anchored in the relevant populist people-centrism and anti-elitism, while also to be selectively focused on environmental issues that continue to be in line with the overall orientations of the populist party in question. This has potential implications for the actual policy impacts that populists might have. The chapter suggests that future research should consider more case studies and, with the resulting data, refine the framework presented in this book.
