ABSTRACT

The internship at Cook County at that time was probably the best in the United States because it gave complete opportunity for one’s learning every kind of general medical technique. It was a highly coveted position and the work was excruciatingly difficult, with heavy responsibilities and long hours. There was no mercy. Close to the final hours of author's psychoanalysis, Dr. Meyer went on vacation. He never returned. It turned out he had some form of hematological cancer that he knew about which suddenly but predictably flared up and led to his rapid demise. In his experience with patients whose analysts have suddenly died, suddenly became disabled, or suddenly moved away without notice, this can be devastating and render further psychoanalysis with another analyst under a cloud from the beginning.
