ABSTRACT

Children as humans are born with a natural curiosity about the world and about themselves as places of creation. The children very soon realised that hanging around just playing all day was a bit limited, caused problems for parents and left teachers pretty short on literacy and numeracy skills if they ever wanted to earn a living. The children are encouraged to experiment and create different ways of representing their thinking; pictures, models, diagrams, maps, ciphers, words. Some people find it easier to put ideas into pictures and find using words to describe concepts difficult and visa versa. Children learn a lot from seeing what adults do, not just what they say. If teachers want to encourage children to maximise their learning and understanding they need to accept this may not always be represented in neat handwritten form with correct punctuation and spelling or grammatically correct utterances.
