ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on substance abuse and the consequences of engaging in such behaviours. The facilitator reads through the offender’s diary entitled ‘Substance Abuse’. The offender’s diary describes how Carl engages in substance abuse which then leads him to attack a middle-aged woman as she passes by. He pressurises the woman into giving him money. She feels too frightened to leave her home and feels that the whole situation has left her in a very difficult position. The young people are asked to identify what led to the substance abuse as described in the diaries and to consider what people actually get out of taking these sorts of drugs. The chapter encourages the development of problem-solving skills. The young people are presented with a problem scenario and then asked to make use of the problem-solving format which is structured in the solution focused manner.
