ABSTRACT

This chapter contains explanations, examples, and ideas that will help readers reflect with their students on the importance of the grammatical concepts and the corresponding texts described in the previous chapter. This chapter opens with information about what it means to reflect with students on the importance of authentically used grammatical concepts, identifying and discussing key components of this practice. Next, the chapter describes why this practice is important to inquiry-based and asset-focused grammar instruction, highlighting how it can facilitate students’ understandings of the significance of authentically used grammatical concepts and prepare them to do similar analyses in their own inquiries. After that, it shares instructional examples of how this practice can look in the classroom by spotlighting my work with seventh- and tenth-grade English classes. The chapter then provides recommendations to keep in mind when incorporating its ideas before closing with takeaway points and infographic that highlights key ideas.
