ABSTRACT

This chapter gives readers ideas, explanations, examples, and suggestions that they can use as they help students identify examples of grammatical concepts in their out-of-school lives and analyze the importance of those examples to the contexts in which they’re used. The chapter begins with a description of what it means to help students identify and analyze authentic examples of grammatical concepts in the context of grammar inquiries. After that, it discusses why these inquiry-based learning activities are so important to students’ understandings of the impact of grammatical concepts. Next, the chapter provides examples of how the author worked with his seventh and tenth graders while they identified and analyzed examples of grammatical concepts from their own lives that they used in their grammar inquiries. It then shares key instructional recommendations to keep in mind when helping students identify and analyze authentic examples of grammatical concepts for the grammar inquiries they are conducting. Finally, it concludes with key closing points and a useful infographic.
