ABSTRACT

This chapter provides an overview of move analysis and describes the general research procedures for carrying out a move analysis. The chapter then identifies some of the ongoing challenges with this methodology and offers innovative solutions to improve it, drawing upon the cognitive theory of genre developed in Chapter 3. The chapter also draws a distinction between moves and steps, as they have been traditionally conceptualized, and what are referred to in this book as “systemic functions”, which can be conceptualized as a group of communicative functions that are dispersed throughout the text and are not bound to a particular section.
