ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses historical developments of the juvenile justice system in India. The juvenile justice system in India originated during British rule and was the direct consequence of western ideas and developments in the field of prison reforms and juvenile justice. It also highlights the important structural changes introduced in the criminal justice system in the pioneering countries for implementing the concept. Further, the report of the Indian Jail Committee constituted in 1919–1920, which focused on the segregation of juveniles from adult offenders, has been discussed in a nutshell in this chapter. Also, important findings of the Raghbir v. State of Haryana, which was another landmark development in the history of juvenile justice, have been discussed as well.
