ABSTRACT

In 1988, a Japanese industrial engineering consultant and author, Shigeo Shingo, bestowed his name on the “North American Shingo Prizes for Excellence in Manufacturing.” Shigeo Shingo, wearing glasses and a graduation hat, sits with pursed lips, looking straight ahead. Shingo wanted the prizes, which were administered by the Jon M. Huntsman School of Business at Utah State University, to be awarded each year to organizations and academics whose work exemplified the best of Shingo's teachings. The Shingo Institute has assessed organizations in various industries around the world. The Institute has seen first-hand how some organizations have been able to sustain their improvement results, while far too many have experienced such a decline. In conjunction with the Shingo Workshop series, the Shingo Institute has set out to publish six books that are specifically focused on the primary components of the Shingo Model and its guiding principles.
