ABSTRACT

The Emerald Necklace was designed by Frederick Law Olmsted an his team from 1872 to 1892, and completed construction in 1895. BAU's first lesson is that it in principle, it doesn't matter how narrow the strands in a green space network become, what is important above all else is to ensure they are continuous. The success of the Boston Park corridors owes much to the prioritization of park over road. Long lengths of park are uninterrupted by roads crossing and dissecting the corridors. While landscape architecture paradigms swing from side to side – whether to create indigenous ecosystem corridors or exotic cultural artifacts, smart landscape makes room for both – two systems, both with a role to play in a 21st-century landscape. Despite being a movement starting in the west, Nehru saw the egalitarianism and abstraction of modernism as an urban and architectural philosophy and language that was free of the race-based power and colonial baggage of western classicism.
