ABSTRACT

Prior to our protracted exploration of Black Women’s Liberation Movement music, it will be important to, first, share with readers a brief history of the Black Women’s Liberation Movement. Consequently, the first chapter, “The Black Women’s Liberation Movement,” provides an abbreviated overview of the movement and its major figures. It argues that, as with any other socio-political movement, the Black Women’s Liberation Movement of the 1960s and 1970s had several major objectives, organizations, activists, theorists, and themes. Key questions this chapter seeks to answer include: What was the Black Women’s Liberation Movement? Who were its leaders and members? What were the core concerns of the Black Women’s Liberation Movement? What was its relationship to the Black Power Movement? What was its relationship to the mainstream and more noted Women’s Liberation Movement? What was its relationship to the Sexual Revolution of the 1960s and 1970s?
