ABSTRACT

This chapter traces the development of China’s cyber literary criticism over the past 20 years to present a history of transformations. First, cyber literary criticism subverted the elitist exclusivity of traditional literary criticism and shared with the masses the right to write their own literary reviews and short comments. Then, an online criticism ecology with postmodern characteristics was created, which promoted openness, interaction, and diversity in criticism. Finally, there was a convergence of netizens’ commentaries and scholars’ articles, which gave rise to many innovations in terms of theoretical discussions. Cyber literary criticism’s functions were extended, while its humanist concern remained unchanged.
