ABSTRACT

This chapter examines ordinary netizens’ critical commentaries on literary works, focusing on their forms, contents, and rhetorical expressions. In terms of form, such commentaries can be fragmentary and interactive, suitable for people’s daily reading and communication. Some of them, however, are more well-organized as netizens’ “monologues.” In terms of content, such commentaries can be expressions of netizens’ understandings of and responses to literary works. They can be casual, unrestrained, and emotionally charged. Some may even be subversive to established ideas and rules, while some are more distinctively postmodern and deconstructive. In terms of rhetorical expression, these commentaries can be colloquial and sometimes even vulgar. Some unique styles of Internet language and buzzwords also appear to make netizens’ writing more popular and highly personalized.
