ABSTRACT

In the aftermath of TBI, many survivors and family members express drastic changes in their relationships with a negative impact. Spouses or partners, specifically, must often change many parts of their lives: changes in relationship roles, responsibilities and challenges in communication occur instantly and with no preparation. The renegotiation of relationships is depicted. With her close friend, there seems to be no time for friendship, fun or leisure. She is no longer his intelligent and fun-loving companion who can handle multiple tasks or an empathic listener and problem-solver. Relationship changes also occur with her Dad, aunt and friends.

Close friends and family members are educated about brain injury. “I am my own worst enemy trying desperately to be independent while not being able to remember what it is that I am trying to do unsuccessfully, and not physically capable … nor cognitively.” All rehabilitation therapies continue in this time frame.
