ABSTRACT

In this chapter, nature-based design will be shown as a successful application for creating healing public spaces. The design of healing and therapeutic gardens has become a significant source of creative work for landscape architects. In her book Therapeutic Landscapes: An Evidence Based Approach for Designing Healing Gardens and Restorative Outdoor Spaces, Clare Cooper-Marcus. Her work also led to the therapeutic benefits of plants and nature in all types of settings: elderly care campuses, Alzheimer's care facilities, urban public places, and school classrooms. Three projects in this chapter provide three different environments created by landscape architects to calm and heal in urban settings.
