ABSTRACT

Landscape architects often draw from their earlier, formative-year experiences. One's memories inform and are a source of inspiration for designers. Past experiences are often the inspiration for a design idea or concept. Memories of playing in neighborhood and community parks or hours in nearby woodlands and creeks serve as the stuff that are sources of design inspiration for play areas. Landscape architects draw from their personal experiences as children or travel later in life as adults when working on design projects. Design is often infused with our memories and form a narrative when explaining design concepts to others such as clients. This chapter features four very different children's play areas that were designed as places for experiences and not as places filled with equipment. Each play area echoes a sense of place, very much incorporating elements of their region. They are places for all ages to experience and enjoy the out-of-doors.
