ABSTRACT

This chapter features three residential gardens located in very diverse landscapes and regions. The landscape architects created designs based on in-depth research of the site and region considering the climatic, seasonal variations, physical conditions (such as soils and hydrology), and native vegetation. The landscape architects created designs that celebrated the endemic landscape and cultural and historical attributes of the region. The private garden of the husband-and-wife couple is located in Australia. The design emerged as a process over time and was constructed by the couple using local plants, materials, and art. The two other designs are located in mountain regions of the USA and were designed by a professional firm then constructed by local landscape contractors. Both projects incorporated local materials to support the goal of creating designs that reflected signaled they belong to their unique location.
