ABSTRACT

This chapter concerns the further and ongoing ‘in service’ development as a mentor. There are two main sections. The first contains ideas for practices, processes and activities mentors can use to support their development, alone and with others. For example, detailed descriptions of activities for use with groups of practising mentors are provided, as well as ways to use feedback from the mentee or ideas for further developing listening skills (see Chapter 2). The second section lists and summarises some of those conceptual tools, theories or ideas from others that may prove useful while engaging in SIRP on a mentor’s own mentoring practices. The author does not claim that these ideas are exhaustive or always relevant. They are, however, together with others included in earlier chapters (for example, ‘Scaffolding’ in the Introduction or ‘Noticing’ in Chapter 6), ones that mentors have found pertinent and useful on more than one occasion.
